"If You Don't Grind, You Don't Shine" — Looking Back at USD's 12 PFL Titles

Last Saturday, that hard work and resilience culminated in a historic achievement as San Diego captured its 12th PFL Championship to tie Dayton for the most titles in conference history. Against all odds, USD grinded, and now it — along with the PFL championship trophy — shines, a feat that serves both as a testament to the Toreros' resilience and a reminder. A reminder that even amidst the most challenging of circumstances, the road to the Pioneer Football League championship runs through S

The Streak

SAN DIEGO—Five years, five months, and 24 days. Players' entire careers, students' entire college experiences. Renovations to Torero Stadium. A pause due to a global pandemic, then a resilient return to the gridiron in an unconventional spring season. As the winds of change swept across Alcala Park over the last half decade, perhaps only one thing held constant on the sun-soaked plateau that University of San Diego Athletics calls home: USD football's Pioneer Football League win streak. The team rattled off 39 PFL victories in a row, to be exact, holding strong week in and week out as the rest of the conference tried to topple the Toreros and their historic run. Not bad for a school that at one point lost its football program due to a lack of interest.

USD QB succeeding abroad

Anthony Lawrence stayed close to home for college. Despite receiving interest from the University of Pennsylvania and Yale, the La Mesa, California native elected to attend and play quarterback at the nearby University of San Diego — just a 12 mile or so drive from where he grew up. Playing in front of friends and family during almost every home game, he went on to have an illustrious and lengthy career as a Torero that is nearly beyond compare within the program, a career that saw him become bo

Reflecting with Lawrence

Anthony Lawrence isn’t shy about talking about it — the University of San Diego isn’t exactly where he originally envisioned his college football career taking place. “You look at the campus and it’s beautiful; going to college here would be awesome,” Lawrence said, reflecting on his high school self. “But as far as football, I hadn’t really thought about playing football here. I kind of envisioned going to a big FBS school or a bigger FCS school.” Five years and a USD-record 12,036 passing ya

Toreros win Pioneer League

When Anthony Lawrence fired a touchdown pass to Michael Bandy with 14:05 to play in the first quarter, it appeared that it was business as usual for the Toreros. With Lawrence connecting with his favorite receiver early on, USD looked to be well on their way to their 34th consecutive home conference victory on a sunny Saturday afternoon at Torero Stadium. However, the remaining 44 minutes and five seconds of USD’s matchup against Davidson University — who USD defeated by more than 50 points last

Lawrence soars in USD win

Game after game this season, the University of San Diego football team has found success by consistently putting up big numbers on offense. Their effort last Saturday was no exception. Taking on the Jacksonville University Dolphins at Torero Stadium, the Toreros exploded for a season-high 59 points in a victory that had more than its fair share of special moments, the most notable of which being yet another accolade for USD’s star quarterback, Anthony Lawrence. Toreros take down the University of Dayton, 36-34 It wasn’t easy, and at times it wasn’t pretty, but the University of San Diego football team earned themselves a Homecoming Weekend win. Taking on the University of Dayton Flyers (3-4, 2-2 PFL), the Toreros faced their toughest Pioneer League opponent yet, battling for a narrow, 36-34 victory in a game that was marred by multiple gaffes on special teams. At times, the close game evoked shades of USD’s last home loss to a PFL team eight years and

Football takes down Stetson

The last time the University of San Diego football team lost a home conference game, most of the players on their current roster were in middle school. The iPhone 4 was the latest and greatest from Apple, and USD’s Fowler Park had not yet been constructed. Yes, the Toreros’ home Pioneer Football League (PFL) streak runs that deep. It’s been nearly eight years — since Oct. 9, 2010 to be exact — since Dayton University edge
